I've been futzing around for a few days trying to think about what I should put here (if anything), and I've come to the conclusion that for me at least this may be one of those things where the only way to start is to start.

Over the past week I watched the first non C-Drama series I've watched in, like, maybe a year and a half? The Netflix Wednesday series, which was good fun. Loved seeing Gwendoline Christie, the art direction was fun, I only worked out when the full credits ran at the beginning of the final episode that the 'normie' botany teacher was Christina Ricci, the whole 'normie' v 'outcast' thing was a but on the nose, imho, but whatever, didn't buy Catherine Zeta Jones as Mortisha even a little bit: she just doesn't have the screen presence, Enid the roommate was giving early seasons Buffy Willow Rosenberg, and what's not to love there, and the lead actress put on a real star turn. So, that was a nice little holiday. Today I'm back on my bullshit, episode 28 of Being a Hero, i.e. the big drug bust showdown, the one with The Phone Call.

I have been really having to drag myself through this drama, which is a pity, bc it really is an excellent piece of work. The propaganda is all out there waving in the breeze, not that that's anything like a surprise, but I don't think for me that has been the problem. It's just the whole gritty, minor key nature of the thing. This style of show has been very much my thing at different times and places, but not so much right now. I will definitely be finishing it, I've gone this far I need to get my emotional payoff, but basically, Yibo frowns for 85-95% of his screen time, which is entirely appropriate given what's going on, but that's just not giving me life. Chen Xiao absolutely eats his role as the morally grey childhood friend, whenever he's on the screen I can't look away. The cast as a whole are excellent, in fact, but it still doesn't really ring my bell. C'est la vie.

The other C-Drama I'm actively watching is Hikaru no Go, which has an extremely different emotional temperature. I'm neither loving nor hating it particularly; I am a little surprised how highly it's rated on My Drama List : 8.8 makes it the 10th highest rated C-Drama of all time in their data base, tying with last year's 'You Are My Glory', which not only did a lot more for me, but stars Diliraba and Yang Yang, two absolute A listers who spend the entire drama looking *gorgeous*. But there's no accounting for taste, I suppose. I've just passed the halfway mark of Hikaru no Go, maybe it will pick up in the second half.

Anyhow, now it's late and I should turn in. More ramblings about something else entirely (probably) another time.
